Missionary Health Service searched various areas of Honduras to find a suitable place to settle into and offer our health services. We selected our Chapagua clinic site deliberately because it suited our focus to attend “the most needy”. The clinic is located in the department of Colon on the North Coast of Honduras and 12 miles from the Caribbean Sea. The area was resettled by composinos after the land reform law in the 1960-1970’s whereby the land-less people were given land for the establishment of farm cooperatives. As expected, the area is largely agricultural and private farms and cooperatives offer employment, some income and stability for their families.
The average income varies from $400-$900 per year which isn’t enough to support a family of 5-9 children. This area lags behind most of Honduras in many respects and is not a portrait of the country in general.
Chapagua and the 14 surrounding villages certainly qualify as needy and deserving are within 1-3 hours of walking or a horseback ride. The entire area can be categorized as low socio-economically and the educational level is rudimentary at best. Historically, the majority of the school age children drop out of school after the 6th grade. Many students never finish the 6th grade.
Our aim was to attend the “poor and needy” and we feel very satisfied with Chapagua as our clinic site selection as it is the geographical hub of the villages that we serve. The people of the area are gentle, kind and very appreciative of our assistance. Both we and the villagers each consider ourselves “partners and friends”. They help us in the clinic and are so essential for the success of our program.
